Bail or RUI Outcomes: Post-Interview Recording Checklist
The outcome stage is where many attendance notes thin out — yet bail conditions and RUI outcomes drive immediate client obligations and future court work. This scenario guide covers post-interview recording before you leave the station.
Record the outcome precisely
Distinguish NFA, charge and bail, charge and remand, RUI, and simple bail without charge. Each has different client consequences. Record the offence(s) charged or under investigation, the next court date if applicable, and bail conditions in full — not "standard bail."
Bail conditions
Copy conditions verbatim where possible — curfew, exclusion zones, non-contact, reporting requirements. Record that you explained conditions to the client and that they understood. If conditions were argued or varied, note representations.
- Outcome type — NFA, bail, RUI, charged, remanded
- Offences charged or under investigation
- Court date and court name if applicable
- Full bail conditions
- Client advice on compliance and breaches
- Follow-up actions for the firm
RUI-specific recording
Released under investigation has no expiry in the same way as bail, but clients still need clear advice on contact with police, preserving evidence, and not interfering with witnesses. Record what was explained and any written notice given by police.
Before you leave the building
Outcome and bail advice should be recorded before you leave — not reconstructed from memory in the car park. Structured outcome sections prompt these fields while the detail is fresh.
Frequently asked questions
What if bail conditions were not finalised when I left?
Record what was known, that conditions were pending, and any follow-up arranged. Update the note when conditions are confirmed — or add a supplemental file note linked to the attendance.
Should I diary bail dates in the attendance note?
Record dates in the note and ensure they are captured in the firm's diary system separately. The note is the evidential record; the diary is operational — both should align.
Is RUI the same as NFA for note purposes?
No. RUI means the investigation continues. The client may be re-interviewed or charged later. Record RUI explicitly and advise accordingly.
