Custody Note for Windows is on the Microsoft Store (UK)

Custody Note for Windows is live on the Microsoft Store in the UK. If you want a structured attendance note app that works offline at the station, you can install it from the Store like any other firm software.

Key takeaways

• Custody Note for Windows is available on the Microsoft Store UK (Store listing; Store ID 9NFSRVT3T45V).
• Free during beta. No credit card.
• For Windows, the Store is the primary install path. Updates come through the Store.
• Direct Setup.exe remains a backup on the download page.
• Mac is separate: notarised .dmg from the download page only, not the Microsoft Store, not the Mac App Store.
• Made for structured PACE attendance notes in criminal defence and police station work in England and Wales.

1. Why install from the Store

Duty solicitors and accredited reps don't want another awkward installer. A Microsoft Store listing keeps roll-out simple.

Updates via Store. Once installed from the Store, Custody Note updates through the same channel as other Windows apps. Less chasing of installers. Less “which version is on that laptop?”

Easier firm roll-out. Partners and IT can point fee earners at one UK Store page. No hunting for a random .exe in email. For practices that already use Store-managed apps, this fits the existing pattern.

Lower friction. Get it from Microsoft Store, open from the Start Menu, set your recovery password and firm details, and you're ready. The app works offline from day one.

That's the point of this post: product availability and install path, not another billing explainer.

2. Windows: the Store first, Setup.exe as a backup

Primary: install Custody Note for Windows from the Microsoft Store UK.

• Listing: apps.microsoft.com: Custody Note for Windows
• Store ID: 9NFSRVT3T45V
• Windows 10 or later (64-bit)

Prefer the Store when you can. It's the cleanest path for new installs and ongoing updates.

Backup: if the Store is unavailable, or your machine can't use it, download Setup.exe from custodynote.com/download. Same product. Same beta access. Use the direct installer only when you need it, not as the default for every fee earner.

Both Windows routes are free during beta. No credit card required.

3. Mac: direct download only

Mac users aren't left out, but the path is different. Keep it clear.

• Mac Custody Note is a notarised .dmg from the download page only.
• It's not on the Microsoft Store.
• It's not on the Mac App Store.
• macOS 11 or later; Apple Silicon and Intel builds are on that page.

Same licence key works on Windows and Mac when you have one. It works offline in the same way. Only the download route is different. Don't search the Store for a Mac build. You won't find one there.

4. What Custody Note is for

Custody Note is a Windows attendance note app (and Mac app) for structured, offline police station notes under PACE, aimed at criminal defence practitioners in England and Wales.

You capture the attendance as you go: client and custody references, times, disclosure substance, advice and instructions, interview record, outcome, and a usable time breakdown. The goal is a contemporaneous note that survives handover, not a free-text scramble written up the next morning.

For the craft side of note-taking, see How to Write Attendance Notes. This post is about getting the app onto the machine.

Custody Note is run by Defence Legal Services Ltd. It is not endorsed by the Legal Aid Agency.

5. How to get it

Windows (recommended): open the Microsoft Store UK listing for Custody Note for Windows and install.

Windows backup / Mac: go to custodynote.com/download for Setup.exe or the notarised Mac .dmg.

Free during beta. No credit card. Install once, work offline at the station.

If you already use Custody Note via Setup.exe, keep that path, or move new machines to the Store for simpler updates. Start from the Store listing or the download page.
